We all dream about the things we wish we had.  Some of us want that wide-screen TV.  Others want expensive clothes.  But the majority of us dream of having something that we think we will never be able to afford.  If you talk to different people, their “pipe dreams” might include traveling across the globe, living in a mansion, drinking $100 bottles of wine every day, or owning a huge yacht.

Are these “pipe dreams” OK?

I think having one exotic dream is OK . . . provided that it does not consume you.  It’s OK to dream in general because our dreams can help us shape our goals.  The quest to achieve our dreams is a healthy endeavor.  Dreaming without striving or putting forth any effort to realize that dream, however, stunts personal growth.

But as long as you have a plan for targeting your dreams and working hard towards realizing them, you’re in good shape.  Even if it’s a materialistic “pipe dream,” it’s healthy.  Others might tell you that you’ll never get to enjoy that dream, but what do they know.  These luxurious visions should motivate you to break away from the employee mold and develop streams of passive income that can bring those visions to fruition.

I have many dreams, including traveling, drinking good wine every day, and watching sports on a 60-inch LCD TV.  Those things motivate me to realize my financial goals.  By doing so, I’ll be able to afford and enjoy the wine, the traveling, and the TV.  But one major “pipe dream” really gets me going, and that’s the Ferrari F430.

Forget for a second how much this car costs.  It is absolutely stunning.  I have seen a few of these on the road, and they give me goosebumps.  I can’t imagine what it’s like to cruise down the street in one of these things, but I don’t stop myself from dreaming about it.  When I see someone driving it, I know that it’s not impossible–and it’s actually very possible–that, somewhere down the line, I can drive one of these cars.

“Pipe dreams” like these can motivate you to keep trudging forward.  Whenever I feel stressed or frustrated at work, or whenever I feel like financial success is far off, I hop over to YouTube and watch the scene from Miami Vice in which Sonny and Tubbs are speeding down I-95 in this very car:

That short scene conveys the “coolness” that the Ferrari F430 exhibits.  Seriously, how can you NOT feel like Sonny Crockett if you got to drive that car?

If you have that one “pipe dream” . . . that one vision that someone tells you is impossible to achieve, hold on to it.  The more people attack it, the more you should protect it.  Just because it seems unattainable to others doesn’t mean it’s not possible for you to grasp.  Keep it close, and use it as motivation to achieve your own financial freedom.  In the end, it will have been well worth it.
