But one of Josh’s posts from last week seemed to miss the point completely.Â
In that post, Josh celebrated his blog being ranked #1 in Google for the keywords “unconventional marketing” and “unconventional marketing blog.” That is always a feat that deserves celebration. Sure enough, his blog made it to the top:
Â
The problem, however, is that no one searches for the keywords “unconventional marketing” or “unconventional marketing blog.” Wordtracker’s free keyword research tool comes up with nothing for either keyword:
Â

SEO Book’s keyword suggestion tool also turns up zero searches for those keywords.
If no one is searching for those keywords, then no one is going to notice that Josh’s blog is ranking at the top of Google. I’m not trying to take a shot at Josh or his blog. Perhaps Josh is focusing on other ways to get some publicity for his chosen keywords. Maybe he forgot to mention something relevant in his post.
But this is a very important point for anyone interested in optimizing his/her site for search engines.Â
The most important SEO tip when targeting specific keywords (in order to rank well in Google) is to make sure that people are actually searching for those keywords!! If very little or no people are searching for those keywords, then there is no market for such keywords. It would be like opening a McDonald’s in a town where people don’t like or are not interested in McDonald’s.Â
You need to make sure a market exists for your product or service . . . or, in this case, your keywords. That is the most important SEO tip to keep in mind when optimizing your blog or website for search engines.

1You are totally correct in your assessment. I was merely excited that I had achieved #1 for that particular keyword due to its relationship to my blog. Typically when I target new keywords I aim for at least 10k searches a month and work my way up those ladders. I probably only get 200-300 hits a month from google for unconventional marketing as the key term, it is not widely used. I am also shooting for number 1 for my name and I know only a couple of people search that each month. I don’t just aim for high traffic keywords but keywords that are important to me as well, unconventional marketing is one of those.

2On a separate note you introduce me as John in the first sentence not Josh.

3Josh, I’m glad you agree. I like reading your blog, and I knew that you HAD to have known that “unconventional marketing” wasn’t a highly-searched keyword phrase. You’re a smart guy, and I just knew that something wasn’t right (i.e., you had left out in your post that you were just excited that you had gotten to #1 for that keyword, etc.). Anyway, thanks for not taking this post the wrong way.
By the way, I fixed the error (i.e., changed “John” to “Josh”).

6ChiQ Montes, thanks for commenting. SEO is the most useful (and cheapest) tool out there to drive traffic to your site.
Paul U, thanks for the comment. To get to #1 on Google isn’t as hard as you think. It involves a combination of both, on-page AND off-page optimization.
