It's not so risky if you have experience in selling a product / service on your own. People shouldn't be scared to take 'risks', they ought to get over their fears and jump on the opportunities in front of them. Your right, it's all about a lack of knowledge. Education is truly the key to starting a business.

Anca, that's a very good point. Societal pressures influence us a lot. I guess the counter-question to ask when you experience that kind of pressure is, "If they're right, then why aren't they rich?"

A good quote to keep in mind when encountering this pressure is one from Oscar Wilde: "Everything popular is wrong."

I really liked this post. Sometimes I ask myself why am I so scared of leaving the comfort zone and take some risks? I guess it's just society's pressure we all feel, you're "supposed" to have a job, work hard, and don't take any risks with money. Quiting a job and venturing into something on your own isn't what most people do, so anyone trying to go against the "flow" will feel intimidated by society. I don't know how many times I heard stuff like "it's crazy, don't do it, you're better off staying where you're at" from friends when talking about taking risks.

Mark, thanks for the comment! You hit it right on the nose. Risk only exists when one makes uneducated decisions. Increase your knowledge, and risk disappears.

topickero, thanks for reading! I was like my conservative friend, too. A lot of us tend to be. But the gap between those types of people and entrepreneurs is not that large. You're absolutely right that recognition is the first step.

I have been thinking about risk lately and have realized that risk is only risk if you are making uneducated decisions. Think about how risky it would be to fly a 747 with no training? and then think about a trained pilot flying the same plane? The training makes the plane one of the safest modes of transportation.

I'm more like your conservative friend there. Wish I can think like that lawyer who sold his notes. The first step is recognition, right?

Thanks for the post.
